Renting Áo Tứ Thân: North Vietnam (Bắc Bộ) Concept, Quan Họ, and Festival Photography 2026

TL;DR (60 seconds)

Áo Tứ Thân is a North Vietnam (Bắc Bộ) folk costume that appeared in the 17th century, with a 4-panel structure (2 front panels split in the middle and tied at the waist + 2 joined rear panels), associated with Quan Họ female singers of Bac Ninh, the Lim Festival on the 12th-13th of the first lunar month, the Huong Pagoda Festival in the 2nd-3rd lunar months, and Bắc Bộ village communal houses. Quan Họ Bắc Ninh was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 09/30/2009 in Abu Dhabi. Rental prices at Gạo Nâu: 500,000 VND/4h, 750,000 VND/8h, 1,000,000 VND/day, deposit 3,000,000 VND — includes peach-colored Yếm, lĩnh silk skirt, silk waistband, nón quai thao. Suitable for: group photos of 4-6 girls with Quan Họ female singer concepts, village communal house festivals, Đường Lâm countryside concepts, Huong Pagoda.

The history of Áo Tứ Thân — the mother costume of the Vietnamese people

Áo Tứ Thân officially appeared in the 17th century in the Red River Delta, being the oldest áo dài style recorded in Bắc Bộ temple and communal house sculptures. The image of Tứ Thân is carved on stone steles at Đình Bảng communal house (Bac Ninh), Bút Tháp Pagoda, So communal house (formerly Hà Tây), showing that this was a common costume for Vietnamese women from the Later Lê dynasty (1533-1789).

In 1744, Lord Nguyễn Phúc Khoát promulgated costume reform in the southern domain (Đàng Trong), transforming Tứ Thân into Ngũ Thân by adding an inner lining panel. Meanwhile, the northern domain (Đàng Ngoài) under Lord Trịnh's rule preserved the traditional Tứ Thân. This division created a cultural costume map: Tứ Thân belongs to Bắc Bộ (North), Ngũ Thân spread throughout Central and South Vietnam.

From the 19th to the early 20th century, Tứ Thân became a symbol of rural Bắc Bộ women — associated with the images of "a young man searching for his beloved at Đồng Xuân market" and "a girl picking mulberries by the Đáy River". In the literature of Nguyễn Tuân, Tô Hoài, Nguyên Hồng, Tứ Thân is the dress of the hardworking mothers and sisters of the delta region.

In 1934, when the artist Cát Tường (Lemur) modernized the áo dài into the contemporary style in Hanoi, Tứ Thân gradually receded to the role of a folk performance and festival costume. However, in the Quan Họ villages of Bac Ninh, Tứ Thân is still worn by female singers during the duet singing sessions — maintained to this day.

The most important milestone: on 09/30/2009 in Abu Dhabi (UAE), UNESCO officially recognized Quan Họ Bắc Ninh as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Along with this heritage, the Áo Tứ Thân — the iconic costume of the female singers — was also honored as an inseparable element.

The "Tứ Thân" structure — what are the 4 panels?

Unlike the modern áo dài with only 2 panels (front-rear), Tứ Thân has a 4-panel structure clearly separated:

ComponentStructureFunction
2 front panelsSplit in the middle from collar to hem, tied at the waist with a knot at the sideOpen and airy, allows movement, enables a waistband to be tied
2 rear panelsSewn together as one piece, extending down to the kneesCovers the back, provides a stable standing form
CollarSmall round collar, thin fabric trimSimple, modest
SleevesLong sleeves, regular cut, not tightComfortable, suitable for work
HemReaches the knees or 5-10cm above the kneesCreates a flowing flap when walking
Bottom openingThe front panels are not sewn shut, left open when walkingAllows the inner skirt to be partially exposed
Core difference from Ngũ Thân: Tứ Thân **does not have an inner lining panel** on the left side. This is the key technical detail that distinguishes the two — and is also the point that professional Quan Họ customers often ask Gạo Nâu about in detail.

Accompanying costumes for Tứ Thân — the complete Bắc Bộ outfit

Tứ Thân is never worn alone. The complete Bắc Bộ outfit consists of 6-7 items, each with its own cultural role:

1. Peach Yếm (inner halter top)

The Yếm is a rhombus-shaped piece of fabric cut diagonally, worn inside the Tứ Thân. The peach Yếm — peach pink color — is the classic color of unmarried Bắc Bộ girls. White Yếm is for young maidens, dark Yếm is for married women. The Yếm has straps tied at the neck and behind the back.

At Gạo Nâu, Yếm accompanying Tứ Thân comes in many color choices: peach, pink, vermilion red, turmeric yellow, ivory white, jade green — a total of 8 basic colors.

2. Lĩnh silk skirt

A black skirt worn underneath the Tứ Thân, made of lĩnh fabric (glossy black silk), black velvet, or satin. The skirt is long, reaching the heels, with many pleats creating a puffy shape. While the Tứ Thân is open at the bottom, the lĩnh skirt is exposed, creating a beautiful black-color contrast in photos.

3. Multi-colored silk waistband

Quan Họ characteristic: women tie 3-5 silk waistbands stacked on top of each other, each in a different color — creating a "rainbow waist" effect. Common colors: green, bright red, turmeric yellow, purple, pink. Tying method: knot in front of the belly, let hang down below.

Waistbands at Gạo Nâu come in a standard Quan Họ 5-color set, each 2m long.

4. Khăn vành dây or nón quai thao

Khăn vành dây: a silk scarf 1.5-2m long wrapped around the head to form a circular band, for married women. Wrapped in the "crow's beak" style — tying 2 ends in front of the forehead resembling a bird's beak.

Nón quai thao: a wide-brimmed hat with a diameter of 70-80cm, with long quai thao straps hanging down to the chest. This is the number 1 symbol of Bắc Bộ Tứ Thân. The nón quai thao in photos very effectively creates a "shielding from sun and rain, hiding the charm" pose.

5. Wooden clogs or fabric shoes

The "clip-clop" sound of wooden clogs on the communal house courtyard is a distinctive sound. Old-style black fabric shoes are also suitable. Gạo Nâu has both types — customers can choose according to their concept.

6. Makeup

Traditional Bắc Bộ makeup:

  • Black teeth (in the past dyed with lacquer scale insects) — not required today, can be drawn as fake using dark brown lipstick if the customer wants
  • Light lipstick — deep red or muted brown
  • Willow-leaf eyebrows — thin, curved, elegant
  • Bun hairstyle or shallot bun — neat at the nape of the neck
  • Scarf wrapped around hair (if not wearing nón quai thao)

Suitable photo concepts with Tứ Thân

1. Lim Festival — Bac Ninh (12th-13th of the first lunar month)

The Lim Festival takes place on Lim Hill, Tiên Du district, Bac Ninh province — the homeland of Quan Họ. This is the best time to wear Tứ Thân: female singers sing on dragon boats, exchanging with male singers; the Đồng Kỵ market square is bustling; Hồng Ân Pagoda, Phật Tích Pagoda surrounds the hill.

Suggested concept: a group of 4-6 girls in Tứ Thân of different colors, standing on a dragon boat on Vân Tương Lake, holding betel and areca, singing the lullaby "Người ơi người ở đừng về". Golden hour: 9am-11am (soft sunlight).

2. Văn Miếu Quốc Tử Giám (Temple of Literature) — Hanoi

The "old Western school girl" concept: Tứ Thân combined with a writing brush, classical Vietnamese books, wooden chairs in the Thái Học building. This is a beautiful combination of traditional Bắc Bộ women's imagery and a classical academic setting.

Note: Văn Miếu charges an entrance fee of 30,000 VND/person, does not allow changing clothes on the premises — so change at the Gạo Nâu studio before traveling.

3. Huong Pagoda — Mỹ Đức, Hanoi (festival in the 2nd-3rd lunar month)

The Huong Pagoda festival lasts from the 6th of the first lunar month to the end of the third lunar month. The Tứ Thân concept at Đục wharf, Yến stream, Hương Tích cave is a delicate combination of traditional costume and sacred pagoda scenery.

Note: you must travel by boat, wearing Tứ Thân while sitting on a boat requires care to avoid wrinkling the dress.

4. Đường Lâm Ancient Village — Sơn Tây, Hanoi

Đường Lâm is the "only ancient village in Vietnam that still retains intact 17th-19th century Bắc Bộ village structure". Mông Phụ ancient house, Mông Phụ communal house, Mía Pagoda, stone village well — all are perfect backgrounds for Tứ Thân.

Concept: a Bắc Bộ girl carrying a load to the market, sitting by the well, standing at the gate of an ancient house. Đường Lâm is 50km from Hanoi, easy to travel in a day.

5. Halong Bay — Quảng Ninh

Bắc Bộ waterscape concept: Tứ Thân sitting on a small boat, sea breeze blowing the dress flaps, limestone mountains as background. This method creates the feeling of "a Bắc Bộ woman going to the sea" — both classic and majestic.

6. Gạo Nâu Studio — 351/45 Lê Văn Sỹ, HCMC

Indoor "Bắc Hà Festival Night" concept: Đông Hồ painting backdrop, red paper lanterns, betel and areca props, rush flower mat. This is a choice for Saigon customers who want Bắc Bộ photos but cannot travel north.

7. Communal house festivals Bến Tre / Bến Thành

"North-South reunion" concept: a Bắc Bộ Tứ Thân girl photographed at a Nam Bộ communal house, combined with coconut trees, Tiền River. This is an interesting cultural fusion, suitable for Saigon customers who want a hybrid concept.

Group photo concepts of 4-6 people with Tứ Thân

Tứ Thân is the best costume for female group photos among Vietnamese costumes — because the multi-colored silk waistbands allow rainbow coordination that photographs very well.

"5 Quan Họ girls" concept

  • Girl 1: green waistband
  • Girl 2: bright red waistband
  • Girl 3: turmeric yellow waistband
  • Girl 4: Hue purple waistband
  • Girl 5: ivory white waistband

Áo Tứ Thân keeps a neutral tone (dark brown or deep brown), Yếm keeps a pastel tone — so the waistband stands out. Pose: 5 girls standing in a row, each tilting her head in a different direction, all wearing nón quai thao.

"Modern Bắc Ninh singing group" concept

6 girls: 3 wear traditional Tứ Thân (brown, black, brownish-red) + 3 wear modernized Tứ Thân in bright colors (jade green, pink, lemon yellow). Pose: holding rhythm, singing Quan Họ, with a mini dragon boat as a prop.

"Mother-daughter-grandchild" concept

3 generations: grandmother 60+ wearing dark brown Tứ Thân + khăn vành dây + fake black teeth; mother 30-40 wearing light brown Tứ Thân + nón quai thao; child 5-10 wearing small pink Tứ Thân. A meaningful concept about Bắc Bộ tradition being passed down.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Should foreign customers rent Tứ Thân?

Yes. Tứ Thân is an iconic Vietnamese cultural costume, very suitable for Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese customers who want to experience Bắc Bộ culture. Western customers may find it a bit complex due to many accessories (Yếm + skirt + 5 waistbands + hat) — Gạo Nâu staff will assist with tying.

Do I need to know how to sing Quan Họ?

Not required. The photo concept can just be posing — no need to actually sing. However, if you want photos with soul, Gạo Nâu advises customers to listen to 2-3 classical Quan Họ songs ("Người ơi người ở đừng về", "Ngồi tựa song đào", "Cây trúc xinh") to understand the spirit.

Is wearing Tứ Thân to Hoi An suitable?

Possible but not optimal. Hoi An is a Central Vietnam ancient town with mixed Chinese-Japanese-Vietnamese architecture — more suitable for áo dài or Ngũ Thân. Tứ Thân photographed in Hoi An will create a sense of "cultural mismatch". Tứ Thân is recommended in Bắc Bộ (Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Halong) or a classical studio.

Can children wear Tứ Thân?

Yes. Gạo Nâu has children's sizes from 3-12 years old, heights 90cm-150cm. Yếm and waistbands are adjusted to suit small arms. The 3-generation "grandmother-mother-child" concept is very popular.

Are there sizes for people 1m75 tall?

Yes. Gạo Nâu prepares sizes from XS (1m45) to XXL (1m80). Customers 1m75 and above should notify 5-7 days in advance to prepare custom-tailored áo if needed.

Can the waistband be tied for first-time customers?

Yes. Gạo Nâu staff will help tie all 5 waistbands (5-10 minutes/person). Customers just need to stand still. For long-term rentals, customers can request self-tying instructions.

Are there betel and areca prop accessories?

Yes. 1 set of fake betel and areca (1 green areca + 5 betel leaves + 1 red lime + 1 tobacco + 1 fan) costs an additional 50,000 VND. This is a very important prop for the Lim Festival, Quan Họ concept.

Are there discounts for a 1-day Hanoi tour rental?

Yes. When renting the 1-day package (1,000,000 VND), Gạo Nâu offers a 10% discount if the customer is on a Hanoi-Bac Ninh-Halong tour. Must notify 5 days in advance and pay a normal deposit.

Is there a matching áo dài rental for the groom?

Tứ Thân is a women's costume with no corresponding men's version. If wedding customers want a Bắc Bộ couple, Gạo Nâu recommends: wife wears Tứ Thân + husband wears Ngũ Thân Tay Thụng (classical men's áo dài). This combo costs an additional 1,200,000 VND/8h.

Is there a hair bun upgrade?

Yes. Gạo Nâu offers bun / shallot bun / scarf-wrapped hairstyling services — surcharge 200,000-400,000 VND depending on complexity. Book 1 day in advance.

Can the large nón quai thao accessory be rented separately?

Yes. Customers who already have their own Tứ Thân costume (self-made or rented elsewhere) and need only accessories — Gạo Nâu rents out separately the nón quai thao (150K-300K/day), khăn vành dây (100K-200K/day), wooden clogs (50K-100K/day). Accessory deposit 500,000 VND.

Do I need fake black teeth painted on?

Yes. Real black teeth (dyed with lacquer scale insects) is not done today because it damages tooth enamel. Gạo Nâu offers fake black teeth drawing services using dark brown lipstick + wax — lasts 4-6 hours, easily washed off with water. Surcharge 100,000 VND.

Are there many Yếm color options?

Yes. 8 standard Yếm colors: peach (peach pink), pink, vermilion red, turmeric yellow, ivory white, jade green, Hue purple, light blue. A group of 4-6 people can each choose a different Yếm color to create a "flower garden".

Is there a 6-girl group concept?

Yes. Gạo Nâu has a "6 Quan Họ girls" concept — 6 áo Tứ Thân in different colors + 6 rainbow waistbands + 6 nón quai thao. Package price 6 people 8 hours = 3,600,000 VND (after 10% discount). Book 7-10 days in advance.

How many days to refund the 3 million deposit?

3-5 business days after returning the costume and checking the condition. 100% refund if the costume is intact, not stained beyond the allowable limit, not returned late.

Do Western customers wearing Tứ Thân at Lim Festival 12/13 of the first lunar month look out of place?

Not at all out of place — on the contrary, Western customers wearing Tứ Thân at the Lim Festival are warmly welcomed by Bac Ninh locals. Quan Họ female singers often invite Western customers to take photos together on dragon boats on Vân Tương Lake, offering betel and areca. Cultural notes: bow slightly when receiving betel, do not step over the singing mat, take off shoes before entering Lim communal house. French, German, American customers in 2025 have photographed here and been featured in local newspapers.

Surcharge for Tứ Thân rental + fake Quan Họ singing (loudspeaker)?

Gạo Nâu has a mini bluetooth speaker service playing classical Quan Họ — surcharge 100,000 VND/day, including a playlist of 20 UNESCO 2009 standard songs (Người ơi người ở đừng về, Ngồi tựa song đào, Cây trúc xinh, Còn duyên, Lúng liếng…). Speaker battery 8 hours, volume sufficient for a group of 6 people shooting outdoors. If renting at the Lim Festival or Bắc Bộ communal house, you need to ask the organizing committee for permission in advance because the festival has its own main loudspeaker system.

Bắc Bộ business renting 12 Tứ Thân sets for a Quan Họ event?

Yes. Gạo Nâu has a B2B package for businesses organizing year-end events, anniversary celebrations in Bac Ninh, Hanoi. Package of 12 matching Tứ Thân sets (8 hours) = 7,200,000 VND after 20% B2B discount, including 12 rainbow waistbands + 12 nón quai thao + 1 Quan Họ speaker. VAT contract, red invoice issued. Need to deposit 50% 14 days in advance to prepare sizes from XS-XXL.

Black vs brown lĩnh skirt tone — which suits which landmark?

Glossy black lĩnh skirt (traditional lĩnh silk) suits classical landmarks: Văn Miếu, Huong Pagoda, Đường Lâm communal house, Đình Bảng Bac Ninh — black tone creates contrast with red bricks and mossy ancient tiles. Deep brown skirt (brown velvet or brown satin) suits rural outdoor scenes: ripe rice fields in Mai Châu, terraced fields in Sapa, Bát Tràng ancient village — brown tone blends with earth, rice, village roads. Gạo Nâu has both tones, customers notify the landmark in advance to prepare.

What is the cultural meaning of betel and areca prop accessories?

Betel and areca is a symbol of love, marriage, and friendship in Bắc Bộ culture — associated with the legend of Betel and Areca from the time of the 4th Hùng King. In Quan Họ, a piece of betel is the "beginning of the story" — female singers invite male singers to eat betel before singing duets, symbolizing a polite invitation to courtship. Gạo Nâu's betel and areca prop includes 1 green areca + 5 heart-shaped betel leaves + 1 red lime + 1 tobacco + 1 palm leaf fan — complete for the Lim Festival, traditional betrothal concept.

Are there sizes for 8-year-old children to wear Tứ Thân?

Yes. Gạo Nâu prepares children's sizes 3-12 years old (height 90cm-150cm), 8-year-old size (height 120-130cm) is the most common. The complete children's set: small Tứ Thân + Yếm + lĩnh skirt + 3 waistbands + mini nón quai thao (50cm brim) + fabric shoes. Children's rental price = 350,000 VND/4h, 500,000 VND/8h. The 3-generation "grandmother-mother-child" concept with an 8-year-old child is very photogenic in Đường Lâm.

Tứ Thân + Ngũ Thân combo for a North-South Vietnam family?

Yes. The "North-South one family" concept is very meaningful for families with a Northern daughter-in-law and Southern son-in-law or vice versa: wife wears Bắc Bộ Tứ Thân (brown/black + nón quai thao) + husband wears Central Vietnam Ngũ Thân Tay Thụng (jade green + headdress) + children dress according to one side. Couple combo 8 hours = 1,200,000 VND. Add 8-year-old child = +500,000 VND. This concept is suitable for wedding anniversary photos, 70-80th birthday photos for grandparents.

Is wearing Tứ Thân in Hoi An (Central Vietnam) regionally culturally mismatched?

Yes, somewhat mismatched. Hoi An is a 17th-19th century Central Vietnam ancient port town with mixed Chinese-Japanese-Vietnamese architecture — associated with modern áo dài or Ngũ Thân Tay Chẽn (Nguyễn Dynasty). Tứ Thân is a Bắc Bộ rural costume with no history in Hoi An. If you still want to take photos, Gạo Nâu recommends the "Northern tourist visiting the South" concept — a Tứ Thân girl visiting Hoi An ancient town, not blending with the architecture but creating a story of regional cultural intersection.

Surcharge for premium brocade dragon-embroidered Tứ Thân?

Gạo Nâu has a premium hand-embroidered brocade Tứ Thân line (dragon-phoenix, five-colored clouds, lotus) — surcharge 400,000-600,000 VND/8h depending on complexity. Vạn Phúc Hà Đông brocade fabric is shuttle-woven, embroidered with real gold/silver thread (90% cotton + 10% metallic). Suitable concept: traditional wedding photos, 70-80th wedding anniversary photos for grandparents, communal house clan head photos. Must book 10-14 days in advance, deposit 5,000,000 VND (higher than basic deposit).

Total price for renting Tứ Thân + Yếm + lĩnh skirt as a complete set?

The complete set is included in the basic rental price: 4h package = 500,000 VND (Tứ Thân + Yếm + lĩnh skirt + 5 waistbands + nón quai thao + shoes), 8h package = 750,000 VND (plus khăn vành dây), 1-day package = 1,000,000 VND. Not charged separately for each item. If customers rent only 1-2 separate items (Yếm + skirt, or hat + scarf) — separate accessories 150,000-300,000 VND/item/day, deposit 500,000 VND. Recommended to rent the whole set to ensure color coordination, no tone mismatch.
